MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon - How to do Finger Neck Portage with Thulani Mbanjwa

Put the bicycle down for a minute and check this out! The MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon is in its 70th year of existence. This 3 day canoeing race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal is iconic in the paddling community and beyond. Participants face rapids, man made weirs, gruelling flatwater stints across Inanda dam, and of course the infamous portages where paddlers carry their boats over long distances to cut out large bends in the river or unpaddleable gorges. In the lead up to the event taking place from the 18th - 20th of March this year, we took a trip to KZN and met up with Thulani Mbanjwa, a legend of the race, where he would share some of his expertise on how to approach and navigate certain rapids and portages on the route. We cruised into the valley in our CMH Group Hilux, proper style, and got down to business. Here Thulani shows how to deal with another portage on Day 1. It is called Finger Neck and cuts out a significant bend in the river. Short and sharp but quite difficult to negotiate at the takeout point. Put the bicycle down for a minute and check this out! The MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon is in its 70th year of existence. The final day of the 2020 KAP sani2c brought the muddiest challenge yet! What is usually a fast cruise to the sea became a muddy mess posing a real technical challenge for the riders. The first day of the Race at sani2C was full taps out the gates. Trails were grippy in some places and hellishly slick elsewhere. Better late than never! As the 2020 year was drawing to a close, there was an opportunity for the Enduro Western Cape to put on an event amidst the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic. The Tygerberg MTB Club trails in Contermanskloof were to host the race, the weather played ball, and good times were had! With a large number of first time enduro riders, as well as a good helping of out-and-out racers (some on eMTBs!), the vibe was set to be classic Enduro style with plenty of fun and sporty competition being the name of the game! Join J-Dogg and Nick Lamond as they swing a leg over the Cannondale Habit Neo and explore the roads and trails of Cape Town on what could not have been a better day for it! 3 hours and 50km of riding, taking in some stunning views and great coffee, gave the boys a good introduction to the Habit Neo and what it's all about! The Habit Neo is Cannondale's shorter travel E-Bike sporting 130mm out back and a 140mm fork. The component spec is well chosen to offer comfort and control out on the trail. Wide bars, dropper seat post and appropriately potent brakes mean this bike is ready for any adventure, be it a big day tour or a quick trail rip! The new Bosch CX 250W motor supports with ample power when you need it and is well modulated though the 4 different operating modes. The 500Wh battery on the Carbon 3 model managed to get the boys around and over some proper mountains! The Carbon 1 and 2 models come with a 625Wh battery for an increased range. The ALL RIDE crew got out to Contermanskloof for a good ol’ rip on the Black Rhino trail and to cap off another season of the show! We’ve had some incredible experiences over the past year, got to ride some sweet bikes and visit some great places! We have also seen J-Dogg and Nic Lamond join the show as full time presenting crew. The ALL RIDE show now has Nic waffling on about technical things, Douggie B working hard behind the scenes while occasionally coming up for air, and J-Dogg talking a lot and rocking a questionable hairstyle. We finally got us all in the same episode to go and hit the trails! It was Nic’s first time on the trail and the self-proclaimed “king of blind” rocked up with with a 100mm marathon bike and no dropper post. To his credit, he made it work. Well done Nic. We all had a good time and some laughs, stoked to wrap up a good season! We will be back with season 3 of ALL RIDE in October so hang tight! TRAIL TRIPPIN' | EDEN FOREST | STELLENBOSCH | 4K

It was about time we went trail trippin' again so with the Eden Forest trails in Stellenbosch in our sight, we rallied some local boys and saddled up! Joining us on the trails we had Max Sullivan, team manager for Imbuko Giant, and Adi van der Merwe who is an all-round weapon on a bike! They both know the trails backwards so we were in good hands. Eden Forest is right next to the town of Stellenbosch and links up to other well known networks such as Mont Marie and G-Spot. The climb up is quick and you've got a variety of trail options suitable for any level of riding. It has all the makings of a classic riding spot! Come along for the ride and see what it's about! The trails here are free to ride but their existence and upkeep is owed to the Stellenbosch Trail Fund. They do some incredible work keeping things running! The Karkloof Valley sits in the heart of the KwaZulu Natal Midlands has to be one of South Africa's best mountain biking and gravel biking destinations! Based out of the Karkloof Country Club, there any many riding options across all aspects of the sport from marathon trails all the way through to serious gravity trails. The accommodation options are endless and the setting is simply epic! We could have easily spent two weeks up there exploring and we probably would not have worked our way through all of the trail options! Based on the riding we have experienced in the valley so far, we highly recommend a trip out there but you will need more than a few days to really get the most out of the riding options available! If you do ride in the area, be sure to pay your trail fee's at the Karkloof Country Club. Trail marshals do patrol the area and will fine you should you be riding without the necessary permits. The trails are on private lad after all! At just R70 for the day and R700 for an annual permit, its a real bargain! Round 3 of the Western Province Downhill series is coming up fast! The event will take place on the weekend of the 28/29 November at the Hellsend Dirt Compound in Vuurberg. Enduro riders take note, there is an enduro category and the track is certainly rideable on an enduro bike! In terms of entry cost it is R500 for the full weekend or R350 for just the shuttle day. Entries are limited to 150 riders and will close at midnight on the 26th of November. Mandatory protection includes: Full face helmet, elbow coverage and knee guards. Stage 2 starts on the classic Supertubes trail with its beautifully shaped berms and spicy rock garden but then takes a left down the flat-out Freeride line! Table Mountain and the Cape Epic prologue route have been pounded by riders over the last few weeks as they prepare for the worlds largest MTB stage race! This unique route sits in the heart of Cape Town and offers riders a real challenge! Although the route is only 20km in length, it is packed with some vicious climbs that will test the legs! The entire route is incredibly accessible so we encourage one and all to pack a cooler box and hit the route and support the riders come race day on the 15th. This is a Dusi Canoe Marathon story f.t Andy Birkett and Khumbulani Nzimande as they set out on their mission for glory! If they can pull it off, it will be Andy's 10th win but it will be Khumbulani's first. What is the Dusi Canoe Marathon? It's an iconic 3 day, 120km canoeing race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in KwaZulu Natal. It is one of South Africa's quintessential endurance challenges having been around for 69 years!
